As noted in a previous post, the Great Recession stood America’s job market on its head. With construction and manufacturing industries which traditionally employ more male than female workers handing out pink slips by the truckloads, many American women found themselves the primary breadwinners for their families. Even though male jobs are bouncing back, jobs traditionally held by women, which did not suffer appreciably during the recession, remain strong and a growing number of wives in married households now out-earn their husbands.Breadwinner Mom

Many feel the change in the balance of financial power will be good for society, hopefully banishing glass ceilings and finally equalizing male and female pay scales. But many, including many working moms, worry that the growing incidence of breadwinner moms is placing an unhealthy strain on American families and particularly on our children.

In a recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center, nearly 80% of Americans supported women’s new role in the workplace. However, only 20% felt the current trend of young mothers working outside the home was beneficial for American society. Of greater concern was the finding that 3 in 4 adults feel that it has become more difficult to raise children as more moms have entered the workforce.

Rather than a single issue, the social upheaval now underway reflects a major social shift driven by complex and interrelated forces. As Kim Parker, associate director with the Pew Social & Demographic Trends Project, told the Washington Post:

“Women’s roles have changed, marriage rates have declined — the family looks a lot different than it used to. The rise of breadwinner moms highlights the fact that, not only are more mothers balancing work and family these days, but the economic contributions mothers are making to their households have grown immensely.”

Job opportunities that allow women to better balance work and family have been increasing with the rise of virtual employment and consulting and freelancing jobs.
